1 - Macro Express v 3.5a is released
Macro Express 3 version 3.5a has been released and is now available for download from our site at http://www.macros.com/download.htm. All licensed Macro Express 3 users can download and install this update without cost.

Changes include:

  - You can now specify only the date in the "Set System Time" command.
  - The "Reload Macro Preferences" now works when only the player is running.
  - The "Delete File/Files" no longer deletes empty folders.
  - The Pause Macro hotkey now works properly.
  - Whenever the macro file is saved, a copy of the macro file is kept in the temporary directory. When Macro Express tries to load a file, if it does not exist the user is given the option of loading the previous macro file in the temporary folder.
  - The "Rename File/Files" command now works better when a wildcard references only one file.

After installing Macro Express 3, you can click Start | Programs | Macro Express | What's New for a complete list of changes. You may also view the list of changes on the web by visiting http://www.macros.com/revise.htm.

2 – “Macro Express Explained” is now available!
Macro Express Explained is a new book written about Macro Express by Joseph Weinpert of Professional Grade Macros. It has over 400 pages of information about how to use Macro Express. Macro Express Explained can be purchased from our shopping cart, by mail, phone or fax: http://www.macros.com/order.htm.

More information about Macro Express Explained is available at http://www.macros.com/macexplained.htm.

3 - Tip: Variable Set From Misc
Do you need to write a macro that needs to know the location of the My Documents folder? How about the Start Menu or the Desktop? Do you need the name of the macro that is currently running? Do you need to change how the macro runs depending on which machine it is running on? Do you want a macro to greet the user by name?

Use the "Variable Set from Misc" command. This command returns values for these and other information variables you may need.

Macro Express saves its preferences in different locations in the registry for different users. If you are writing a macro to set the Macro Express preferences, your macro will need to know where in the registry the preferences are located. The "Variable Set from Misc" command will return that value.

This command returns information that can be very useful in your macros.

4 - User Submitted Macro - Random Desktop Background
Jim Sabean submitted a macro that will randomly select a .jpg file from a special folder and set the desktop background (or wallpaper) to that file. Do you have digital pictures you would like to have as your desktop background? This macro will do it for you. Pretty cool. Read more about this macro and download it from http://www.macros.com/usermacs/umrandombackground.htm.

We would like to thank Jim for sending us this macro. He wins a Macro Express T-shirt with the new, cool design.

5 – Macro: Wait for Web Page macro for Netscape 7.1
The Wait for Web Page macro command only works with Internet Explorer. Many of you may be using a different browser such as Netscape, Opera or Mozilla. We have been asked how to wait for a web page using one of these browsers.

This macro will perform a Wait for Web Page in Netscape 7.1 by watching an area on the browser's window that changes color when a web page is loading and then wait for that color to return to normal.

6 – Macro: Protect HOSTS File
Some recent viruses, trojans and other malware have been modifying the HOSTS file on infected computers. Among other things, one result of this tampering is access is blocked to anti-virus, anti-spam and spyware update sites. These programs either alter the original HOSTS file or make a change to your registry to cause your computer to use a HOSTS file in a different location.

This macro is designed to protect your HOSTS file in two ways. First, it checks your registry to make sure that the path to the HOSTS file has not been altered. Second, it keeps a copy of your HOSTS file and notifies you if the HOSTS file in use does not match the saved copy of the HOSTS file.

This macro and the Scan for Banned Programs macro featured in the last issue of the Macro Express News email newsletter are intended to supplement, not replace, other protection software such as anti-virus and spyware detection and removal programs. Use of these macros may provide an early warning of malware.
