Error: “The Macro Express Editor can only be run from the Macro Express Player”

What causes the error “The Macro Express Editor can only be run from the Macro Express Player” or “Macro Express Editor can only be invoked via Macro Express”?

There are two known causes:

1. This error message occurs if an attempt is made to run the Macro Express Editor when the Macro Express Player is not running. Clicking on macedit.exe in Windows Explorer, creating a shortcut to macedit.exe, or using Start | Run to run macedit.exe will cause this error.

Instead, run macex.exe and, if the Macro Express Editor doesn’t load automatically, click on the icon in the system tray to start it.

2. Another cause of this error is actually an error in the Windows Registry itself.

Run Regedit and make sure that

   [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
       and
   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command]

contain “%1” %*

Note that this must be exactly correct. There must be one space between the “%1” and %* (“%1″<space>%*).

Warning: Incorrect registry changes may cause your PC to no longer function. Use with caution! If you are not comfortable making changes to your registry, you should ask someone for help who is familiar with changing the registry. We recommend you backup your registry before making any changes.
