Upgrading Macro Express

Minor Updates

A minor update is identified by the major version number being the same. For example updating from v 5.0.0.1 to v 5.0.1.1 or from v 6.0.0.1 to v 6.1.0.1 is a minor update.

  • When a minor update is installed there is no need to uninstall the previous version, adjust the preferences or worry about copying or converting macro files.

  • New versions of Macro Express may contain new or modified macro commands that are incompatible with previous versions. Be sure to read the applicable Revision History.

  • Macro Express 5 and Macro Express Pro 6 may automatically display a message when a minor update is available and offer to install it. The Automatic Update options can be adjusted in the preferences.

Major Upgrades

A major upgrade is identified by a change in the major version. For example, upgrading from version 3.9a to v 5.0.0.1 or version 4.9.0.1 to v 6.0.0.1 is a major upgrade.

Macro Express 5 is the upgrade for Macro Express 3. Macro Express Pro 6 is the upgrade for Macro Express Pro 4.

When Macro Express starts for the first time it will look for previous installations of Macro Express. If found the macro files and some of the preferences will be loaded into the new version of Macro Express. Macro files from Macro Express 3 are copied and then converted and loaded into the new version of Macro Express.

We recommend that you back up your macro file(s) before conversion.

  • A new major version of Macro Express should not be installed in the same folder as a previous major version. This is handled correctly by using the default installation options.

  • New versions of Macro Express may contain new or modified macro commands that are incompatible with previous versions. Be sure to read the applicable Revision History.

  • Only certain key preferences are converted during the upgrade process. Review the preference settings if your macros do not work correctly.

  • Several Macro Express 3 macro commands have been renamed in newer versions of Macro Express. For the experienced Macro Express user these changes will be easily understood. For example, the ‘Remark’ command is named ‘Comment’.
