What is a Macro?

One of the primary purposes of computers is to simplify and make our lives and jobs easier. They can and do. However, what if we could simplify our use of the computer and automate tedious computer tasks? We would of course be even more productive!

Macro Tasks

A macro is a set of commands that may be played back at will to perform a given task. Some tasks are more advanced than others. Below are a few examples.

Simple Tasks

  • Insert your name and address into a document.
  • Drop boilerplate text into an email.

More Advanced Tasks

  • Read data from a file and insert into a database.
  • Schedule a macro to open a program and run several reports while you are away from the computer.

Tasks performed by macros are typically repetitive in nature providing significant time savings by running the macro instead of typing the same keystrokes or commands over and over again.
